This is how our life looks like currently: adventures, peace, beauty, realization.
Based on where we live and how we live people tend to believe that we must be swimming in money. If we look at what is considered a millionaire (in terms of money) this isn’t the case. We do not have millions on our bank accounts but still it looks as if we are living the life of a millionaire. How is this possible?
All it took where some basic realizations, understandings and the balls to change our lives. So if you want to find out how we did it, just keep on reading! We will outline what we think are the key steps to living the life of a millionaire without a million bucks in the bank.
Step 1: Realize what you don’t want
As important as it is to be sure on what it is you want it is also key to know what it is you don’t want. Talking about what we didn’t want in our lives three years ago clearly showed us that the life we were living back then was definitely not the life we really wanted to have, even though many people considered it to be great. We had a nice apartment, nice car and where making roughly 10.000€ a month which wasn’t too bad with 27 years. Still we had the feeling there must be more to life than simply living this kinda life (working 10 hours a day/having only 30 days off a year) for the next 50 years.
By consciously realizing what you don’t want – without connecting it with a bad feeling – it will be much easier for you to determine what it is that you want.
When we realized what it was that we don’t want in our life one thing became crystal clear: things had to change!
We realized that we were trading the most valuable thing we have in life against a salary: Life time! Our life time is so precious and should not be wasted by working in an office 8-10 hours a day doing things we don’t care about for people that we don’t know.
Most people trade a large part of their life for a fixed salary; a salary that can never be high enough since you are trading the most valuable thing you have: TIME. Time you could be spending with your children, family, soul mate; time you could use thinking about the essential questions in life, seeking your purpose in life or helping those in need. What most of the people do instead is going to work every day to work for somebody we might not even know, doing something we might not even like. It’s a dictatorship in which one will always (no matter what position you’re in) have somebody dictate you what you have to do. And all because we need money in order to survive. Is it worth it though? NO, especially after you start seeing the alternatives!
Step 2: Realize that there is no such thing as security in life
One of the hardest obstacles to overcome is realizing that there is no security for anything in life. (money, love, friendship etc.) Ones you are able to integrate that fact into your life everything will become much easier.
One of the biggest illusion people use to justify that it is necessary to have a job is that it is the only way to have a secure & steady income. In our opinion this is nowhere close to the case. Why? Because one as an individual is totally dependent on those in charge. If they make a mistake, change the strategy or simple because they want to improve margins the job you have today might not be there anymore tomorrow. And there is nothing you can do about it.
This fact led us to the conclusion that we had nothing to lose.
We knew things had to change in order for us to live a happy and fulfilled life. So we looked at what it is we might risk losing when changing the status quo:
We looked at our jobs and the answer was easy: It was not what we were meant to do; it didn’t nourished our soul. We did what we did for the money.
This at first looked like a problem to us (especially because we were about to become parents). But the more we knew what we wanted the more opportunities and ways to overcome a financial dry period opened up. But more on how we intended to make an income in the next section.
We had all the nice things: car, latest technical equipment, luxurious apartment, designer furniture etc. But ones we knew what we wanted losing material goods we owned didn’t felt bad at all anymore. The more we thought about it the more we realized that all these things where holding us back, out of fear losing them. We started seeing that it weren’t these things that made us happy. We felt there is more to life then gathering only material goods. We wanted to be free. And one cannot be free with tons and tons of material goods in tow.
Step 3: Know what it is that you really want
Ones you know what you don’t want and realize that there is nothing to lose in life you are free to manifest what it really is that you want in your life. How would your life look like when there is anything and anybody dictating your life anymore? No boss, no clock, no bank. How does your dream life look like? Imagine it. Close your eyes and visualize it.
To us everything basically came down to one point. What we really wanted from life is to be FREE. Allowing us to live where we want and spend time with whom or whatever we want when we want. We no longer wanted to be a slave to society. We wanted to take things in our own hands. In order to achieve this goal we had to let go of anything and everything that kept us from achieving this goal. This included:
- our jobs
- all materialistic stuff that wasn’t necessary for us (btw. our life today fits in 3 suitcases and it feels amazing)
- “friends” that instead of embracing what we were planning to do and supporting us tried to keep us in the status quo
Today we have much more time to think about the essential questions in life. Realizing that we have lived an illusion for most of our life. We decided we want to share what we have learned in order to help other people live the life they want (this is why we started this blog). Because sometimes all it takes is reading about somebody that has done what one is yet too afraid to do for whatever reason. Helping somebody else is one of the most fulfilling things one can do and believe us everything you give will return one day.
STEP 4: Combine your strength and passion to achieve freedom
Now you’re probably at saying this all sounds great dear Author and seems to work fine for you but … and this is where I would have to stop you, since there is no but. There is a solution to every problem that today might be stopping you from doing the same as we did. They might not always be easy but I am sure if you stay persistent and keep your goal in mind along with what you don’t want you will get there sooner or later.
But before even thinking about personal freedom you will most likely think about your financials. Money still makes the world go round. Without money you cannot pay your bills, your apartment, your food. We know. We have been at the same point. The moment we decided to give up all we had we were even about to become parents. Everybody told us we would need to have a stable income in order to be good parents. It sometimes made us worry for a minute but we continued our journey into a new life having faith and trusting that our decision that we took from the heart would be the right one.
It was. It was the best thing we ever did in our life. Today we spend time with our son during the day, meet inspiring people, discuss how to make the world a better place, dive into topics that are of interest to us and simply enjoy our life.
So here is the next crucial obstacle that you need to face to get to the point of personal and financial freedom: Figure out your strength and passion in life and then combine the two. Don’t immediately think about how to make money with it rather analyze.
- What is your passion? What do you love to do? What would you love to do?
- What is your strength?
I for myself always loved working with computers and the internet has always been a magnet to me. Already several years ago I thought: Wouldn’t it be great to make money of the internet? It would allow us to work anywhere in the world and basically has unlimited opportunities. There is no other market growing so fast that is accessible with no resources from the tip of your fingers. And the best you don’t have to be an expert to be able to earn money online. All it takes is patience, motivation and a thirst of knowledge. Also rest assured that having an internet business doesn’t mean you will have to sit in front of the computer 24 hours. In fact ones you figured out how to make money online it depends on you how much time you want to spend growing your online business. Ones somebody achieved a basic financial freedom and the basic needs are covered money becomes less important.
Once you have this sorted (which I think is the most challenging part where most people give up) everything else goes like a breeze. Trust!
Step 5: Take action.
You will realize that the more you do what you love the more possibilities will open up for you. That is the law of attraction. But you gotta move your butt to rock things. It is all in your hands.
In our case things worked out once we clearly knew what it is we don’t want, what we want and possible ways of getting there. We started working on our dream while we were still in our day jobs.
When I got home from work and on weekends I started learning more and more about Internet Marketing, SEO and how I could make a living from it. It was a simple choice everybody can take. Do I spent my time on things like movies, shopping and partying that most likely will change nothing on my present situation or do I invest this time in something that brings me closer to where I want to be.
In my case it was Internet Marketing. Soon after knowing the basics I started my own projects and it was exiting (because I have started my own project, where I am my own boss) & challenging (things evolved slower than expected) at the same time.
But most important: I never gave up, even though after a couple of month of work there wasn’t much income. But then things started changing (in Internet Marketing some things simply need time), our online income started rising. We went from zero to 30€, 300€, to 3.000€ and rising. 3000€ might not sound like a fortune but it let us feel like millionaires since its money we have made by our self and gives us the freedom to live the life we are living.
This brings me back to the initial statement that living the life of a millionaire is possible without having millions. Since it’s not the money itself that counts rather the freedom you acquire through it.
And as we are trying to show you you can live an amazing and free life with much less than what a millionaire has (sometimes having too much money might also be an obstacle on the way to freedom). It all comes down to whether you realize that you want a change in your life and start taking action.
FAQ (Frequently asked questions)
Was it worth it?
Hell yeah! We are having the best time of our life and haven’t lost anything that wasn’t worth losing!
Would you do it again?
Sure! Of course we made mistakes and should have been wiser in some situations, but I guess that’s life. We learned from each mistake we made, making us stronger & wiser each time and then we moved on.
Is it hard?
The hardest part for many people I would say is to get to that point were you say I can’t and will not take this anymore. Once you overcome this point the path is clear and it becomes obvious what needs to be done. Of course there will be times one would consider to be hard, but I would rather call it challenging.
Will this work for me?
I have no idea, but I would say it’s worth a try; isn’t it? We are born to be free, not to be imprisoned all our life. The world is huge and there are so many things to discover and to do to make this world an even better place. Take action. Do something. Sometimes it doesen’t matter if it is always right what you do. It sometimes is just important to do it.
